A Golfer's Paradise: A Behind the Scenes Look at Leatherstocking Golf Course with Superintendent Mik
"My favorite part of the day is without a doubt the early morning when we are getting out on the golf course...The lake and the surrounding environment is nothing short of special."

One of the sublime experiences guests at The Otesaga can enjoy is a round on our award-winning Leatherstocking Golf Course. While the lakeside setting certainly makes for an amazing round, the hardworking efforts of our grounds staff, led by superintendent Mike O'Neill, ensure that guests enjoy ideal playing surfaces throughout the golf season. Here's an inside look at what goes into maintaining the pristine greens during the busy season, as well as the off season.

Course Preparation

One of the most important tasks in preparing the course for a successful season takes place when the temperatures drop. "Getting the course cleaned up and free of leaves and debris is a big priority," before winter arrives, Mike says. In addition, "we perform a lot of our important cultural practices such as dethatching, to ensure we can provide a quality product on all playing surfaces for the following year."

Of course, weather conditions present a daunting challenge to any superintendent. Rain, in particular can alter the most carefully considered schedule. According to Mike, "the weather dictates every step and approach we take to managing the golf course on a day-to-day basis...We are always at the mercy of Mother Nature."

Course Favorites

Leatherstocking Golf Course offers amazing views of Lake Otsego, and our superintendent has the inside scoop on which holes have the best vantage point for admiring the scenic landscape. Golfers on the 16th tee will see Blackbird Bay and The Otesaga below them, while the elevation on the 11th tee "allows for a fantastic view of the lake," Mike says. While players navigate the challenges of Leatherstocking, the natural beauty provides a calming effect.

With the breathtaking view a constant throughout the golf season, spring, summer, and fall offer different course experiences. Here are Mike's favorite things about each season on the course:
• Spring: The leaves are not full on the trees yet which allows errant shots to sneak through the canopy.
• Summer: The course is in prime shape and the playing surfaces are nice and firm.
• Fall: The beauty of the property is on display with the leaves changing and the smell of fall in the air.

Leatherstocking Golf Course offers 18 holes of championship golf, and Mike O'Neill and our experienced staff make sure that guests experience pristine greens and fairways. Visit our website for more information and for details on our Leatherstocking Subscriber program.
