A Day in the Life of a Museum Maven

About 2 month(s) ago by The Otesaga Hotel

Maybe sports is secondary on your list. That’s okay. Even though Cooperstown is most famous for the Baseball Hall of Fame - there are plenty of alternative activities that have everything to do with culture. Get your walking shoes ready - here’s how to cram as much museum-going, culture-rich fun into one day as possible. Ready, set, go!

The Ultimate Museum Maven’s Day in Cooperstown

Get your green thumb at The Farmers’ Museum. This year’s special exhibit, GROW, is an intriguing look at gardening and offers real life gardening advice you can take home with you, no matter where you live. While you’re at The Farmers’ Museum, take time to wander through the historic village to experience early life in New York.

Feel artsy at Fenimore Art Museum. This year, don’t miss the The Dick Button Collection or the Andrew Wyeth at 100 exhibit. See figure skating inspired art, antique skates and costumes from legends like Dorothy Hamill and Nancy Kerrigan. Then, feast your eyes on never-displayed-before sketches, artifacts, work, and photos of Andrew Wyeth from his granddaughter, Victoria Wyeth’s personal collection.

Light lunch at the Fenimore Cafe. Enjoy a variety of soups, sandwiches, wraps and a selection of beverages including beer and wine at Fenimore Cafe. Indoor and outdoor seating are available with a panoramic view of Lake Otsego.

Say hello to history at Hyde Hall. Hyde Hall is a National Historic Landmark and is considered the finest example of neoclassic country mansions anywhere in the United States. With 50 rooms to explore and a beautiful view from the lawn, this is a great afternoon stop. Daily tours begin at 10am during the summer months and the last tour is at 4pm.

Wine time at Pail Shop Vineyards. Everyone knows that the most cultured people also enjoy the most cultured libations. Pail Shop Vineyards relies on the cool climate viticulture to craft what they see as imaginative and distinctly New York wines. Open every day at 11am, head over and try them for yourself.

A dinner that is creatively Cooperstown at Glimmerglass. No Cooperstown restaurant captures the artistic side of food better than Glimmerglass, right here at The Otesaga. From the in-house dry-aged steaks to the heirloom carrots, locally-sourced items take center stage for an unforgettable meal that features the best the area has to offer, all with a breathtaking view of the lake.

Catch a sensational sunset at the Fire Bar. Linger around the fire, sip a handcrafted cocktail, converse with friends and watch the sun go down over Lake Otsego. The Fire Bar is an uplifting end to a day filled with inspiration at every turn.

If you don’t consider yourself a museum maven, keep watching our blog. This summer we’re making an ideal day itinerary for everyone. Outdoor enthusiasts and foodies - stay tuned, your perfect day is coming soon!
