Instruction and Golf Schools Available With Top Teaching Professionals COOPERSTOWN, N.Y.—Designed by Devereux Emmet in 1909, the Leatherstocking Golf Course is a challenging, 18-hole, championship golf course located at The Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown. The Otesaga was voted one of the 50 top U.S. golf resorts by readers of Condé Nast Traveler, in recognition of the course's excellent design and level of difficulty, as well as of the quality of accommodations and dining at the resort. In Zagat’s golf course survey, Leatherstocking Golf Course received the second highest overall rating for public courses in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, and Golfweek named Leatherstocking one of the ten best public courses in the state. In addition to the quality of play on the course, the Leatherstocking Golf Course has been hailed for its commitment to high environmental standards and to preservation of wildlife habitat. Audubon International officially designated Leatherstocking a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary,” under its Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System (ACSS), a program supported by the United States Golf Association. Under the direction of PGA member Dan Spooner, The Resort offers first-rate instruction and facilities at the Leatherstocking Golf School. Two- and four-day schools or individual lessons are available with acclaimed instructor Ron Philo, Sr. Philo's daughter is Laura Philo Diaz, a top-rated player on the LPGA Tour. Director of Golf Dan Spooner, a former "Player of the Year" in the Northeast New York PGA section, is also available for lessons. The Resort and Golf Course are open mid-April through November, weather permitting, with the golf schools being offered May through September. Golf schools are open to the public as well as guests of The Otesaga. Click here for current Leatherstocking Golf School rates and additional information. Philo's golf-swing instructional program is based on the premise that students should primarily focus on gathering information during their lesson. "I am more concerned about the student's future than how well they play during the lesson," Philo says. "I want each player to come away with a better ability to apply the information provided, allowing their game to grow to whatever level they desire." After receiving instruction, students can practice on the 11-acre driving range and then play the demanding Leatherstocking Golf Course. Sweeping along the western shore of Lake Otsego, the course's deep sand bunkers, well-protected greens and numerous water hazards present a formidable challenge. With elevated fairways providing views of the lake, the course also ranks among the most scenic in the Northeast. The18th hole may be the most exciting on the course "a 505-yard, par 5 with an island tee box on Lake Otsego. The hole “dog legs” to the left around the lake, and the green is located in front of The Otesaga's veranda." For those looking to play multiple rounds, The Otesaga's Leatherstocking Golf Package offers unlimited golf and tickets to area attractions. The package is priced per person, per night, based on double occupancy, subject to availability and requires a two-night minimum stay.
